Record group 89-261 consists of the executive subject files of the Executive Division of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for the years 1974-1979 (bulk of the material dates from 1977-1978). Contains memoranda, correspondence, reports, and studies. These files document the Department's mission (the conservation and development of natural resources of the state) and its daily activities and concerns. Includes information on the various private and public associations and commissions involved with the conservation of natural resources (Great Lakes Basin, Great Lakes Fisheries, Upper Great Lakes Regional commissions; United Conservation Clubs, Wilderness and Natural Areas Council, International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies). The state and federal agency files show the necessity of coordinating the many preservation and recreation programs within the state and the United States as a whole.
